Business in Shoreditch: Interview with David Preshaah Founder of Hoxton FM

G: Tell us about your business?

D: Hoxton FM brings Music, Fashion, Art and Culture to the airwaves across www.hoxton.fm We are an audio magazine of all that’s good and wholesome in East London. We take show’s live from venue’s all over Shoreditch and encourage our listeners to come down and check out the party.

G: What are the main challenges maintaining your business and how are you overcoming them?

D: Organising and managing 27 different show’s into a schedule that will tickle the listeners fancy in the best way. We’re pioneering diversity and high quality and ensuring high standards are maintained requires an active whip.

G: What would you say has been your most memorable experience while developing your business?

Rich MixD: Broadcasting Live at the Rich Mix cinema for the Ping Pong world record break. The event was heaving with a very rich and varied mix of people who came and chatted to us. We had the director of an African Election stop by for a chat, a fashion blogger Miss Cathy, an Artist and band the Coolness all stop by. The venue and event encapsulated all that’s wholesome in East London and we caught it on air.

G: What were the funniest moments that happened while running your business?

D: The photo shoot at the Hitchcock Memorial was quite special, and scary, Dan disappearing in the basement of the Dalston Superstore to sort out a wiring problem was probably his favourite. The fact we are up, running and broadcasting live to over 1,000 people in under 10 weeks is a delight everyday and makes us all smile.

G: Tell us about DO’s and DON’Ts when running the company?

D: Do be bold and ask as many of your friends to help and get involved, don’t assume they will.

G: Why do you choose Shoreditch to run your business?

HitchcockD: Shoreditch is the spearhead for all creative arts with pop culture formed and created here and spread world wide. It’s a great feeling being able to entertain any desire or need you have on any day of the week. Knitting clubs, flower marketing, Jack the Ripper strolling, if you like anything other than country side (and there is Hackney City Farm) then your made. The door policy everywhere is dead friendly, drinks are relatively reasonable for the capital and tourists make a choice to come here, you don’t stumble upon Old Street.

G: What/who should help for the development of Shoreditch entrepreneurial community? What this community is still missing?

D: Poetry readings or plays should take place in the underpass at Algate / Whitechapel with a huge investment in candle lighting. Its never not scary in that underpass and could be quite a special place, that isn’t scary. Perhaps the Dragons should give me a call and I’ll sort out the pitch.

G: Who/what are your favorite CEOs/Businesses in Shoreditch?

D: AAK Art Against Knives who have just opened at Box Park – the art they sell is really fantastic and the work they do helping youngsters to be creative is such a wholesome investment in some really bright people.

G: What are your favorite places in Shoreditch?

D: The bandstand just off Shoreditch High street is great, the Hitchcock Memorial is quite special for everyone at Hoxton FM, there’s nothing like the flower market on Columbia Road on a Sunday. Broadway Market at any time of day is always bustling and London Fields has the freshest bohemian vibe in the summer.

G: What does the future has in store for Shoreditch?

D: Greater access for everyone to get here with the new East London Line, further interest for people to come visit during the Olympics and probably saturation point at some stage when we all leave and go to Camden or somewhere!
