Ever-evolving Cities by Rebecca King

Rebecca King studied Fine Art Printmaking at the University of Brighton. She is constantly documenting my experiences in urban surroundings by taking photos, drawing and collecting imagery. These will later become the generating points for her artwork. She further deconstruct her prints by laser cutting through the paper to represent the parts of the city that once existed. The negative elements from the laser cutter are often shifted and reconstructed in another area to illustrate the continuous reconstruction in the city.

Her practice focuses on people in our ever-evolving cities, particularly concentrating on the rapid urban transformation and the emotional impact of such developments on city dwellers.

Cities are enticing places teeming with contrasting built forms and flowing with pragmatic human activity. They offer an abundance of experiences and sensations, which are constantly in flux and shifting. It is this flux that she is interested in. This is represented in the works through a cascading wave of abstracted shapes and lights, in a torrent of moments and a flood of sensory stimuli. Throughout her artistic practice consideration is given to the way different cities operate and how the city dweller interacts with their environment. The work uses such viewpoints that the viewer is compelled to stand back and encounter the modern city in its speed and its immensity.
