Interview With Miles Bullough Managing Director Of Wildseed Studios

Jesse Cleverly (L) & Miles Bullough (R)

G: Tell us about your business, what did inspire you to start?

We are Wildseed Studios – we are a media company designed to work with new, emerging and entrepreneurial talent to create fresh and original entertainment projects and grow them into global entertainment franchises.

My biz partner (Jesse Cleverly) and I wanted to solve a problem for new creators, many of whom have mastery of the tools to produce and publish content but limited access to creative and strategic mentorship and cash – and also to solve a problem for big media companies that find it hard to apply sufficient resource to the discovery and nurturing of brand new talent.

G: What is innovative / unique about what you do?

We have tried to come at our project with lots of new or different ideas. We are investing 50 x £10,000 into new projects with follow-on investment available for projects that work – in this way we are applying something of the VC approach to tech investments to creativity. We do a very different type of deal with creators and we are trying to create an environment in which we can invest fearlessly into people and their ideas that we have a hunch might work (but little more than that) without trying to second-guess the market.

G: What would you say has been your most memorable experience while developing your business?

As ‘late blooming’ entrepreneurs starting something new and learning so much about so many new things and feeling ourselves developing personally through the experience has been very energising.

One thing we are particularly proud of is that we have set up our offer to talent as a meritocracy and there is no advantage when pitching to Wildseed to be gained from education, access to finance or even experience. We have invested in ideas and people from all walks of life and at all stages of their careers.

Also we have been very inspired by the number of people who have sent us their first invoice and its been numbered ‘Invoice 001’ – creating opportunities for young people is an incredibly fulfilling activity.

What were the most successful or unique projects?

We have announced 12 projects so far and the first 3 are making their appearances now. RalphieTV and Heather’s American Medicine have started their roll-out on our recently created YouTube Channel and our sci-fi horror film Hungerford will be getting its world premiere at a film festival near you very soon! (Watch this space for t further announcements).

G: Who/what are your favorite CEOs/Businesses in Shoreditch/ Tech City?

What Michael Acton-Smith has achieved with Mind Candy has been phenomenal. There is a lot wrong with the Kids TV business model for producers and with Moshi Monsters Michael proved that there is another way of reaching the kids audience and building a great business in the process.

G: What does the future has in store for your business?

The next two years are all about continuing to build the Wildseed Studios brand and continuing to find great new talent, helping them to build successful entertainment properties and then making as many of those properties into businesses as we can. Expect to see a constant flow of content onto our YouTube Channel but also into bookstores, film festivals, VOD platforms, TV Channels … even onto the stage.
