According to the french photographer Yann Arthus Bertrand , « In photography, the most important is not the photographer but what we take ». Indeed, to take a good photo, the talent of the photographer is important but the target is may be more important to have a picture highlighting a feeling, an emotion, etc.

Jack Daly, a young British photographer seems to know how to combine both : talent and good targets. His passion is photography and he highlights the others’ passion through a concept called : « People With Passion ».

Let’s meet the one who brings out the others’ passion with his own one:

Could you give us a brief presentation of yourself and your work ?

I’m a photographer and filmmaker, mostly of people. Anything with people in it interests me.

When and how did you get the idea to photograph the people’s passion ?

I’d always been passionate about anything creative, especially photography, and wondered what other people had strong passions for. I started by taking shots of my brother and father, a few people saw them and slowly people kept coming forward with new and unique passions.

Why is it important to you to highlight the passion of others ?

I wouldn’t say it’s important for me to see others passions, I just found it really interesting. I think without passion people can often feel a bit lost, personally photography keeps me going and dominates everything I do, and learning what made other people tick was really intriguing.

What was the most incredible passion that you have shot?

I really don’t think I can pick just one, the reason the project was such a success was because it uncovered so many different passions. At the root of it we all share the same feelings and dedication, I just wanted to see all the different things people commit themselves to.

You seem to accord a lot of importance to the mise en scène when you take pictures. Do you let others decided how to look in the picture or you give the directions ?

Usually I have an idea of exactly how I want a shot to look, but with people you can never plan it. Each person gives you something unique to work with, which is why I find people so interesting. With People With Passions, each subject looked the same, expressionless and staring into camera as the focus was on their serious commitment to their passion and the items related to it.

How many people did you shoot for this project so far?

Just shy of 50.

What is a good photo ?

A good photo is one that communicates a feeling, an emotion or tells a story. Anyone can take a technically good photo, that is not the challenge.

Do you have some advice for the young people interested in photography ?

Figure out what it is you enjoy, then photograph that. If you shoot what you loved before you even took pictures then you will always be passionate about it. Just keep shooting, all the time, you never stop learning.
