Food waste continues to be a huge issue, worldwide. It’s estimated that every year, approximately one third of the food produced in the world for human consumption – around 1.3 billion tonnes – is either lost or wasted.

That’s unforgivably high and we all need to change. By making small adjustments to the way we buy, use and store our food we can make all reduce the amount wasted. If you need some advice, here are five must read blogs for anyone interested in wasting less food. For a more interactive experience, view the Waste-Less Journey guide on ao.com.

This is the website of writer Jonathan Bloom, the author of American Wasteland: How America Throws Away Nearly Half of Its Food (and What We Can Do About It), which was published in 2010. His blog has loads of tips, advice and resources, including pictures of ‘ugly’ – but perfectly useable – vegetables, and a great graphic on how to make fresh food last longer. Did you know keeping cheese in a cardboard box really works?

The Love Food Hate Waste website is an ideal resource for helping to make food last and stretch to that extra meal. The home page invites visitors to select their country – England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland – so information is relevant and ‘local’. As well as a selection of recipes accessible through a smart tool allowing readers to search type and ingredients, there’s also a ‘Portion and Plan’ tool, a two week meal planner, and plenty more.

‘No packing. Nothing processed. No waste’, vows this blog by Anne-Marie Bonneau. It’s full of genuinely thought-provoking material. She makes dishes from the type of stuff many people would throw out – lard from the free pork fat butchers would dispose of, candied citrus peels, fried potato skins. The writer also hosts free webinars and in-person workshops, opportunities to share her knowledge.

Wonky Veg – A Blog To Fight Food Waste. The brainchild of Malou Herkes, this blog is funny, quirky and brilliantly written. It has a news section – reporting, for example, on a project in Belgium using old bread to create sustainable beer – and carries opinion pieces, initiatives and tricks and tips. Yet its crowning glory is the Back of Fridge (BOF) meals, making use of the typical food-stuffs we commonly find lurking at the back of our fridges.

The Frugal Girl is mother of four Kristen, who specialises in living frugally and saving money in just about any area of life she can. Not strictly a food blog, this website covers a large range of topics, aiming to live economically and efficiently. However, one of her most successful campaigns became known as Food Waste Friday, when she showed the amount of food she was wasting in her own household and invited other bloggers to do the same.
