Clerkenwell Design Week promises a wealth of new products

From 19 to 21 May 2015, Clerkenwell Design Week’s four main exhibitions will be filled with a fantastic range of products on offer. Design Factory, Platform, Detail and Additions offer everything from contemporary furniture and lighting, to cutting-edge materials and luxury accessories.

DESIGN FACTORY

Design Factory at the Farmiloe Building is the largest hub, once again extending across four floors. This is the place to find product innovation from established contemporary brands from the UK and internationally. The venue’s courtyard will also be home to the Leica Camerasponsored café.

Amongst those showcasing the best of British design is Pinch, which is celebrating its tenth birthday, with the launch of its Avery barstool, a rigorously simple design realised in English oak. Very Good and Proper will show a range of furniture including a console table with a solid oak top and a collection of wooden and upholstered benches. Established furniture maker Benchmark will launch its first Fixperts Residency while showing products for the new workspace.

Focusing on contemporary, luxury interiors, And Then Design will present a new dining collection, lounge chair and coffee table, using materials including walnut, leather, brass and copper. Newcomer H Furniture will debut its 2015 collection, while Baines&Fricker will come to the festival with two new furniture ranges, SB01 Ply and BF02 Pew. Start up company TedWood, founded by designer maker Ted Jefferies, will also launch a new range of furniture and lighting designs.

The calibre of international exhibitors is testament to Clerkenwell Design Week’s reputation on the global design stage. Italian brand Magiswill present work by renowned contemporary designers including Marcel Wanders and Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec. Swedish company Mitabwill launch its Cumulus seating and Cluster tables, both by Jonas Wagell. Thonet, new to the venue this year, will debut its 808 lounge chair by Munich-based design studio Formstelle. Fellow German manufacturer Zeitraum will also unveil its M11 timber framed table by Mathias Hahn.

Other brands to watch at Design Factory include MARK Product, Another Country, Vitamin Design, Stellar Works, +HALLE, Gloster, James Burleigh, Stabörd & Co., Tacchini and BoConcept.

In The Shed, a dedicated space beside the venue, British furniture makers will come together to celebrate craftsmanship and design flair – fromCase Furniture and Dare Studio, to Jennifer Newman, James UK, TedWood, Deadgood and Johnson Tiles.

The Lighting Factory, a floor dedicated to all things lighting will also return to Design Factory. Anglepoise will launch its 2015 collection, while British designer Terence Woodgate will exhibit for the first time with his new Core pendant. Occhio will present its Lei light, the first shade luminaire with adjustable radiance, which is capable of holding two luminaires in one.

Derbyshire-based Curiousa and Curiousa will launch a new collection of hand-blown glass pendants in subtle shades including slate grey, smoked olive and aubergine, while CTO Lighting will showcase a range of table lights by Stephane Parmentier. Returning to the festival,Holloways of Ludlow will present exclusive designs from its own-brand lighting collection, as well as the latest ranges by David Trubridge and Jieldé.

Other lighting brands exhibiting include Artemide, Secto Design, ÖRSJÖ, Di Classe, Modo Luce, SCP Contracts, Catellani & Smith, Prandina,Copper & Silk and Mullan Lighting.

The popular Retail Zone will once again be part of Design Factory, on the second floor of the Farmiloe Building. There will be an array of design products available to purchase during the festival from brands including Dyke & Dean, Transport for London, Boskke, Dezeen Watchstore, CrossEyes and Quill.

Textile designer Eleanor Pritchard will also be part of the Retail Zone, launching four new designs from her Aerial upholstery range, alongside her Cebl furniture range produced with Hitch Mylius. black+blum will launch its new Forminimal kitchenware collection, while newcomerDorothy will introduce new additions to its Lost Destination collection of architectural prints, paying homage to the iconic Haçienda.

PLATFORM

Platform at the atmospheric House of Detention is one of the original elements of Clerkenwell Design Week and has established itself as the place to spot the design superstars of the future.

For 2015, the exhibition will include Chelsea College of Art graduate Louise Tucker, who has developed a sculptural lighting collection based on her fascination with weaving wood veneer. African design company MaliMali, which uses a special dyeing and painting technique called Bogolan, will showcase a range of contemporary fabrics in bold and graphic patterns, woven using 100% Malian organic cotton.

Polish designer Danuta Wlodarska, who founded her company Two or three things in 2014, is launching a table collection which is available in painted oak, poplar burl or California walnut. Rubertellidesign, a London-based design studio, which fuses art and design, is launching the IRIDE light sculpture, a dramatic piece composed of aluminium and cotton twine.

Out of the Valley is another example of design entrepreneurship that typifies Platform. The brainchild of designer maker Rupert McKelvie, the company began by designing and building bespoke cabins for off-grid living and for Clerkenwell Design Week, the brand is launching its first furniture collection. Also showing for the first time, A White Workshop will introduce a range of foldable wooden furniture by the company’s founder, Alexander White.

Other exciting brands to see at Platform include Ambrose Vevers, AQUAelite, Bright Potato, DesignK, Dome, llll, STUDIO 23 Textile and Zita Menyhart Studio.

DETAIL

Detail at the majestic Priory Church at the Order of St John specialises in high-end decorative interior products.

Lewis & Wood will present a new wallpaper collection, while Tania Johnson Design, which produces contemporary, hand-knotted rugs, will debut a series of designs named after cities around the world, including London, New York and Zurich.

Swedish textile company Ludvig Svensson, headed up by siblings Anne and Anders Ludvigson, will be showing Yra, an upholstery weight fabric, and Flock and Mineral which are both solar control fabrics. A selection of architectural ceramics, inspired by water and the flowing lines found in nature, come courtesy of Ceramic Art Regina Heinz; Cityscape is a range of new hand-painted flat tiles, while the Flow and Flow 2 ranges are hand-painted 3D tiles.

Visitors to Detail will also be able to see the Mirror 6 collection by London-based design studio Tiipoi which will exhibit at Clerkenwell Design Week for the first time. This range of cast metal wall-mounted and hand held mirrors is made by a local family in Kerala, India. Also new to the festival, Balineum is debuting its first lighting collection, including fixtures that are available in fifteen metal finishes and a selection of inter-changeable lampshades in glass, metal, silk and linen. Mulberry Home, another new exhibitor, will be showing its Bohemian Romance fabric collection, alongside GP & J Baker.

Deftly combining opulent materials, furniture maker Jonathan Baring will showcase a hand crafted oak and ebony cabinet, as well as his orange cracked gesso and nickel console table.

Alongside the ranges of products inside the Priory Church, from C&C Milano and Tracy Kendall, to Tigermoth Lighting, Loophouse, Conker Brown, Geometric Furniture and Jonathan Field, the adjoining garden will be filled with the latest outdoor furniture designs by Cane-line, complemented by a Champagne Jacquart bar which will host the launch of its Rosé Cube.

ADDITIONS

Last year saw the successful debut of Additions, a dedicated space at the Crypt on the Green at St. James Church, offering accessories and small, design-led pieces.

Exhibitors making their debut this year include French firm HJEM, which will launch a range of stylish homewares and papergoods. Kelly Hattwill present a collection of aluminium etched illustrations, taking their cues from cuffs, scratches and graffiti found on public transport, while ceramicist Taz Pollard offers visitors a first look at her playfully contemporary tableware.

Young design talent Wael Seaiby, named by the Design Council as one of its 70 ‘Ones to Watch’, will launch his new Foarms collection, andWhitebeam Studio, founded in 2013 by artists and designers Holly AllenCooper and Diana Allen in London and Brooklyn, will introduce its first Living Space collection, applying geometric forms and freeform imagery on a larger scale in prints and ceramics.

Alicja Patanowska, an emerging Polish designer, will present her latest Plantation collection, a series of porcelain objects that rest in ordinary glasses, allowing the observation of the growing process of plants. Also working with porcelain are London-based ceramicist Melina Xenaki,and Portuguese designer Helena Ambrósio who will showcase her latest designs inspired by the manipulation and folding of paper.

Specialising in modern English creamware in the heart of the Staffordshire Potteries, Big Tomato Company will celebrate its 15th birthday and introduce its Studio Collection as well as a new stationery range, Baskerville, highlighting typography and calligraphy. Also based in the UK, designer Matt Pugh will join this year’s line-up with his hand crafted furniture and home accessories.

During the festival, new exhibitor SITselect will present This is Craft, an exciting showcase of innovative work by colour and material designer Gemma Kay Waggett, designer Joseph James Hartley and ceramicist Billy Lloyd.

This year’s Additions will also see the return of Clivework with its new hand printed fabrics for cushions and throws, Jimbobart with its playful ceramics, illustrations and soft furnishings, and RCA graduate Kit Miles who exhibited in Platform last year with his opulent surface designs. Other brands to watch include Noble and Wood, Rose Sharp Jones, Splinter Designs, and Swedish rug company Pappelina.
