Log Series by Alison Moritsugu

Mosaic take on a new form in artist Alison Moritsugu’s ‘Log Series’. Using up to 194 pieces of small, precisely cut logs as her canvas, Moritsugu paints sections of landscapes on each piece of wood and places them together to create one image.

The standout feature of her work lies within the detail of her painting. Minuscule circles of trees are packed with delicate brushstrokes and vibrant colors. Streams of water and wisps of clouds take on a sense of realism that fades the line between painting and photograph.

The trees she chooses to use hold significance to her work. For example some of the wood was salvaged from devastating storms rather than chopped down for entertainment. Moritsugu creates beauty from destruction and detail where detail is not expected to be found.
