Interview with Foxx, Australian Born DJ Making Noise in the Shoreditch Club Scene!

Foxx interview by Adam Cotier

Australian born Foxx aka Carly Hordern is causing a bit of a stir on the scene, quickly moving up the pecking order and acquiring a fair few gigs of late, not to mention having already played at Pacha London and the exclusive Shoreditch House in what has been a relatively short DJ career. Lets hear a little more on what she plans to do with her early success.

Q: How long have you been DJin for?
A: Just over 2 years, I’ve always been passionate about music, I used to play in a band. One day I decided that I wanted to give DJin a go, so I did! I took a few lessons, got some decks and practised like mad for a few months, then played my first gig and haven’t looked back!

Q: Where was your first gig and how did it go?
A: My first gig was at the Box Bar, a heaving Gay bar in Covent Garden, which is now closed. A good friend managed to get me playing back to back on his set. I’d only been DJin for 3 months or so and was really nervous, I was convinced I’d completely forget how to beatmatch or something… But after one or two mixes and a large vodka lime and soda, I relaxed and had fun with it.

Q: How does the London club scene compare to that of  Sydney?
A: I’m a little out of touch with the Sydney scene, Australia in general produce alot of musical talent, but in my opinion the electronic and dance music scene is pretty dismal! London is much more international and culturally diverse than Sydney. There’s aways so much going on in London and I think there’s so many more opportunities in London for DJs especially, if you want them there are there! There’s so much going on in the London scene its is hard to get bored!

Q: What makes the Shoreditch party scene stand out form the rest?
A: Shoreditch is special for partying because there’s always loads going on, every night of the week. It’s not too ‘wanky’ (can I say that word) or pretentious, there’s somethihing for everyone. Swanky restaurants, trendy bars, cabaret tranny shows, underground warehouse parties and loads of different music… all within a one mile radius!

Q: Whats your favourite club/bar in Shoreditch?
A: I love the roof at Shoreditch House in the Summer when the sun’s out. Shoreditch warehouse parties are always good for some raving! Depends who’s playing though!

Q: Can you remember your first time out in Shoreditch?
A: Yep, I remember my first time out in Shoreditch. I’d just arrived in London and was with my ex boyfriend who took me to me to Jaguar Shoes for beer and Thai food!

Q: Where can we hear you play next, any notable upcoming gigs?
A: My biggest gig so far is actually coming up in March. I’m playing at Sankey’s, and the excitement is almost too much to bear!!

Q: And finally, what has been your best & worst experience as a DJ so far?
A: Best
moment was probably playing on the terrace at a big New Years Eve 2010 party on Sydney Harbour. One of my best friends was there who was also DJ ing and my amazing mum, bopping away! Worst moment as a DJ was being booked to play at a hip/hop garage night, but not really knowing it was that until it was too late!! I don’t play any hip hop or garage and the worst thing was the promoters knew this! I have never seen a dancefloor clear so quickly…very very cringeworthy

You can follow Miss Foxx on  Twitter or  Facebook and to hear some of Foxx’s mixes please visit her soundcloud. I recommend the “Some Like it Deep” mix, it has that ‘now’ Shoreditch nu-disco sound, a great mix that I really enjoy listening to!
