Shoreditch Community: Brick Lane not Tarmac Lane!

You probably have already heard about Tower Hamlets plan to spend £300,000 resurfacing Brick Lane. We think it is simply ridiculous, therefore we ask you to support this petition – http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/brick-lane-not-tarmac-lane/  started by local community member Georgia Warren.  We also asked Georgia a few questions why she started this petition.

What is the petition about?

G:  Tower Hamlets council has secretly taken the decision to tarmac Brick Lane, digging up the historic cobbles and forever defacing this beautiful street.

Why do you think it’s a bad idea?

G: As a local resident, I am desperate to stop this horrific act of vandalism and put the bricks back in Brick Lane. The council claims the tarmac will “smarten up” the area for the Olympics but the cobbles are an integral part of the character of this world-famous street. Everyone I’ve spoken to – from residents of the borough to visitors from outside London and abroad – has been devastated to hear and see what is happening. Brick Lane is the jewel in the East End’s crown, a major driver of its economic renewal, and the council will be acting against the wishes of countless residents if this destruction continues.

How many signatures do you have so far?

G: We have 712 signatures at the moment, and it’s growing all the time. (Petition is here for you to check its status: http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/brick-lane-not-tarmac-lane/ – just click the “signatures” tab under the green banner)

How can  people get in touch with you or how can they support the petition?
