Five Tips for Wannabe Music Producers

Debutant electronic music producer Enrico Giuliani – aka Quiet A Lot – shares with Made in Shoreditch tips and secrets to step into the business with plenty of passion, but no budget.

A collection of practical and theoretical suggestions from an enthusiastic self-starter who has recently released his debut album ‘Get a Name’ (available for free download at his SoundCloud page).

1. Books and practice
– Attending an accredited music production course is a great start to learn skills and techniques and study the basics of sound engineering and live recording. The classes are never boring at SAE Institute – the music college he is attending in Shoreditch – and get in touch with professionals and experts from the music business is fundamental for any aspiring producers.

2. Networking and digital promotion – If music is your real passion it won’t be that difficult to share your thoughts and upcoming projects with your audience and any possible business partners.
Make your music available through the social media is extremely useful to collect feedback and generate new ideas. Be on digital platforms such as SoundCloud, Bandcamp and Grooveshark can surely help to spread your music and in some cases could make it viral. If you are less geeky than that keep a demo of your music always in your pocket and be ready to hand it to anyone potentially interested. You never know where it could end up!

3. Be open to inspiration – Be open to any music styles and listen to different genres is the best way to find inspiration and absorb knowledge. A night out, a live gig or simply a walk in Shoreditch could be an important source of creativeness. You just need to wide open your attention, find something that grab your interest and translate it into music. It’s easier than you think!

4. Listen to feedback – It is always precious to collect comments and feedback on your music. It is probably the only way to understand the taste of your audience and some of the remarks could help you to improve various aspects of your work. Sharing your music with experts and people from the business is also a great opportunity to receive tips and professional opinions – sometimes cruel – on your production.

5. Have a philosophy – Give a meaning to your music based on your attitude toward life, passions and beliefs. Let your personality shine with your production and always focus on your objectives. The only way to make meaningful music is to be ‘indie’ and do things your own way.

These are Quiet A Lot’s tips to face the music business, and be proactive is the icing on the cake to succeed. Talking about his next steps we learn about an upcoming remix on his album, features with other producers and a concurrent Hip Hop project. It seems quite a lot for a debutant!
