World-renowned photography experts from The Huffington Post, TIME, the New York Times, and the Tim Hetherington Trust will judge an exciting breed of photography talent as EyeEm, the world’s premier community and marketplace for a new generation of photographers, launches its inaugural Global Photography Festival & Awards in Berlin on September 12-13, 2014.

Celebrating emerging talent and ‘real photography’ – authentic, original, and often hyperlocal imagery – the annual event includes a global photo competition open for all photographers, from novice to professional. Judges include renowned photography director Anna G. Dickson from The Huffington Post, New York Times photographer Daniel Krieger, Olivier Laurent from TIME magazine, and Stephen Mayes, member of the founding management team at Getty Images, former CEO of photo agency VII, and now executive director at the Tim Hetherington Trust.

Participants will have the opportunity to win cash and non-cash prizes, as well as have their work exhibited at the world famous Berlin Holzmarkt and published in a book. An exhibition of the award winners’ work will also be showcased to the public in London, New York City, San Francisco, Rio de Janeiro, Cape Town, and Tokyo. One finalist will be EyeEm Photographer of the Year, with 2 round-trip flights and accommodation to attend the big Festival in Berlin.

“We’re looking forward to celebrating this new generation of budding photographers, who are defining a new era, with the launch of our Global Photography Festival & Awards”, says Florian Meissner, co-founder and CEO of EyeEm. “Photography has changed significantly in recent years and at EyeEm we see smartphone photography as a natural evolution of the art form. The creative excellence of our community is the center of EyeEm and the Global Photography Festival & Awards are our way of continuing to support and show the world this incredible talent.”

Starting today, EyeEm is calling on individuals from across the world to enter its photography contest. Categories include:

The two-day festival will also feature a conference which aims to connect leaders from the photography, devices, and media industry with the next generation of photographers to discuss the state and future of photography. Attendees at the conference will hear from leading experts who will talk about the future of the industry and the impact of mobile in particular. The program also includes an EyeEm Community Day with meet and greets with winning artists, photowalks, portfolio reviews and masterclasses designed for attendees and those taking part online.

Jury member Stephen Mayes who has shaped the image industry for more than 25 years says: “The mobile phone has transformed our visual culture but we still don’t know where it will take us. At this point the only limitation is the limit of our imagination and I’m excited to join the EyeEm Festival to explore how their creative ambition, innovative technology and dynamic community can help shape visual communication. It will be a blast!”

The inauguration of the EyeEm Global Photography Festival & Awards follows the company’s Global Meet-up which took place over the weekend of May 3rd and 4th. The event attracted photographers across 50 cities around the world, further establishing EyeEm as the premier global photography community and destination for a new generation of photographers to elevate their craft.
