We Never Met: Interview Alex Mendes & Hugo Catraio

G: Tell us about the project? What did inspire you to start it?

Alex & Hugo: Our project is called We Never Met and it’s an ongoing photography experiment on Instagram. Basically what we do is to create a series of short stories for random strangers whose faces we never get to see (we mainly photograph people from their backs). Most of the pictures are taken in London, but we also try to add a few from different places whenever we get a chance to travel. We love street photography and storytelling, so we created We Never Met with the intention to experiment a combination of these two subjects.

G: What is unique about this project?

A&H:  People’s looks can be deceiving, showing you something very different from what they really are. So because we’re not showing people’s faces that allow us to create new identities to them. It’s amazing to observe how even a single line of a story can completely change the way you see a person and create a character around someone.

But to be honest we also like because it gives us the chance to tell some pretty weird stories we have lived and heard ourselves.

G: Why did you choose Instagram as the main channel to do this?

A&H: We think it’s a great space for street photography and at the same time it challenges us to keep our stories short and sweet. Also, we photograph both with our cameras and iPhones, but every picture is edited only on our phones, so having Instagram as our channel to share this work makes every sense in this process.

G: What are your favorite Instagram projects?

A&H: We really like, @showstudio_nick_knight, it’s nice to see how he’s always experimenting with photography and sharing the behind the scenes of his work.

We are also always checking out @thiswildidea, his series with his dog Maddie on things is amazing.

Another favourite would be @burndiary. The idea of having a different photographer sharing new work each 7 days is very interesting and helps to bring fresh work.
