Death Becomes Them: Interview With Sculptors Louise Batey and Gozra Lozano

unnamed

G: Tell us about what do you do? What did inspire you to start?

Gozra: I have a background in make up artistry and photography. I have always enjoying designing and creating visual concepts. Skullpture has allowed me to express my creativity shaping designs in a 3D form. We found that there was a gap in the market for our fashionable Goth designs. Bespoke and unique figures full of decadent glamour.

L: I’m a Graphic Designer, and as all my work is done on a computer, and with more and more communication becoming digital I wanted to get back to creating art with my hands and feeling more in touch with a creative process.

G: Why did you choose to use death theme in your work?

Gozra: Rather than using death as theme in our work, we wanted to bring back to life the characters, adventures and livelihoods through our designs. We give each of our Skullptures a name, background and bring them back to life with a ‘Baroque Rock’ look and plenty of dark humour in the mix.

L: We felt that skulls are a blank canvas to project personalities and back stories on. So rather than death it’s more about bringing the individuals’ stories back to life.

G: How would you describe the art scene in Shoreditch/East London? Why is it unique?

Gozra: The art scene in Shoreditch/East London is eclectic and multicoloured. It is injected with freedom of expression and lack of prejudices. I just love the unique mixture of talent, vision and diversity.

L: Vibrant and full of possibilities.

G: Who are your favourite artists?

Gozra: Far too many to be mentioned in a few lines! Hedi Xandt, Jan Fabre, Shoreditch based Rachel Whiteread and the list goes on and on.

L: Lucien Freud, Gilbert and George, Fornasetti, and Gozra Lozano!

G: What are your future plans?

Gozra: Expanding our Skullpture family, creating new designs with plenty of stories to tell and secrets to keep!

L: To create more Skullptures, we have some fabulous ideas in the pipeline. The only limit is our imagination!
