National Geographic Travel Photographer winners of 2016

Every year National Geographic launches a travel photography contest. The 2016 season has come to an end and winners were announced. After more that 10,000 entries from areas all around the world, the best of the best have been announced for every category. Check out the winners in each category below.

Grand Prize Winner: Winter Horseman by Anthony Lau

Photo taken in Inner Mongolia during a harsh winter. Anthony Lau braved the cold and saw Inner Mongolia horsemen showing off their skills by commanding steeds. He was able to capture the moment where the entire group charged forward from the distance.

First Place, Cities, Ben Youssef by Takashi Nakagawa

Taken in Marrakesh, Morocco, Takashi Nakagawa took his time to capture the perfect frame for his shot.

First Place, Nature, Wherever You Go I Will Follow You by Hiroki Inoue

Hiroki Inoue captured the two foxes chasing each other immediately after sunset in Hokkaido, Japan.

Second Place, People, Rooftop Dreams by Yasmin Mund

It was 5:30 am when Yasmin Mund arrived in Varansi, India. She went up to the top of a building to watch the sunrise and saw the scene below of the sleeping family.

Second Place, Nature, Double Trapping by Massimiliano Bencivenni

Traveling in the Brazilian Pantanal along the Rio Negrinho, Massimiliano Bencivenni noticed that certain areas held multiple yacare. He found the best location and waited for the perfect moment to capture his shot.

Second Place, Cities, Silenced by Wing Ka H.

The location is South China Normal University in Guangzhou, China. Wing Ka H saw the dormitories with the students hanging around one day and took the opportunity to snap a photograph.

Third Place, Nature, Lagunas Baltinache (Atacama Desert) by Victor Lima

Victor Lima ventured out into the most arid desert in the world in search of photographs that had not yet been published. Atacama Desert is one of the best places to do night photography, but Lima decided to change the viewpoint and photograph during the day.

Third Place, People, Remote Life by Mattia Passarini

In a remote village in Himachal Pradesh, India, Mattia Passerine captured an old woman carrying a log back to her home.

Third Place, Cities, Celestial Reverie by Jeremy Tan

Lightning appears to strike Komtar Tower in George Town, Malaysia, during a thunderstorm. Jeremy Tan is able to capture the moment at the perfect second.
