Exploding Images of Beauty: Merve Morkoç

Turkish artist Merve Morkoç has been known for altering images of beauty. ‘Traditionally’ beautiful women are painted with twisted eyeballs and smashed faces. Yet something overlooked when talking about the concept of beauty revolves around beauty from destruction — something Morkoç has covered in a series of drawings and paintings.

While the context surrounding explosions is rarely positive, Morkoç creates beauty in the smoke of eruptions. Soft pencil and brush strokes outline bears, deer and sharks with elegance. She challenges the viewers to alter their perceptions on destruction, placing explosions in a favorable light.

Morkoç continues to take traditional beliefs and spin them on their heads, creating something repulsive in principle yet alluring in practice.
