Paint does not always come in tubes or on palettes. Paintings do not have to take place on a canvas.
Spanish artist Irma Gruenholz defies the norms of traditional portraits and landscapes by creating three-dimensional illustrations. She uses clay to sculpt figures and creates the illusion of a painted image. Sculpting with clay gives her the opportunity to toy with textures and depth perception as she plays with the minds of her viewers.
Viewers are sucked into a world similar to their own, overtaken by smooth curves and subtle ridges. Her work has magic realism elements to it, allowing the audience to escape into a world fantastic enough to get lost in, yet real enough to understand what they are missing in their life.
