Antique Photographs Revamped with Favourite Characters

Digging through old photographs in granddad’s basement can be exciting for the first 15 minutes, but after photo after photo look exactly the same, the wonder begins to dissipate. Each face looks alike and the sepia tone gets old quickly.

Painter Alex Gross took the idea of antiquated portraits and updated them — with classic characters. A class photo is transformed into a group photo of comic book icons. Two brothers are transformed into Batman and Robin.

Gross revives classic photography with a quirky twist. Dull and constant photos are revamped into jocular paintings. Gross’ works urge the viewer to look differently at something constant and imagine the possibilities, whether it be something cheeky or deadpan.
