Home care provider shares dementia care guidance for those across London to mark Dementia Action Week

Louise Blezzard, Founder and CEO of Vivant

To mark Dementia Action Week (13th to 19th May), a provider of high-end home care services based in London has shared guidance for those who have recently taken on the care of someone with dementia and seeking external professional advice.

With Professor Sir Chris Whitty, the UK’s Chief Medical Officer, recently stating the NHS and Government ‘are not ready’ for an increase in dementia cases – expected to rise from the current 1 million to 1.4 million in 2024 – Louise Blezzard, Founder and CEO of Vivant, has shared the tips as a way to provide support and reassurance to the rising level of Londoners providing home care to loved ones with dementia.

The advice, which aims to ensure those recently diagnosed with dementia can get the support they need to maintain living a meaningful, high-quality life, includes:

  • Educating yourself about dementia: Understanding the condition will help you manage and anticipate changes in behaviour and cognitive function.
  • Establishing a routine: People with dementia often find comfort in a predictable schedule. Consistency can help reduce confusion and anxiety.
  • Encouraging independence: Allow the person with dementia to do as much as they can for themselves. This can help maintain their abilities and provide them with a sense of control.
  • Using simple communication: Speak clearly and calmly, use short sentences, and wait for a response. Avoid open-ended questions and instead use choices.
  • Creating a safe environment: Modify the living environment to reduce risks, such as installing grab bars, removing trip hazards, and ensuring the home is well-lit.
  • Focusing on individualised care: Tailor activities and care to the likes and abilities of the person with dementia. What works for one person may not work for another.
  • Supporting behavioural changes: Stay patient and calm. Redirect and distract from behaviours rather than confronting or arguing.
  • Taking care of your health: Caregiving is demanding. Ensure you are eating well, sleeping enough, and taking time for yourself.
  • Seeking support: Connect with local caregiver support groups or online communities. These can provide practical advice and emotional support.
  • Planning for the future: As the disease progresses, needs will change. Discuss and prepare for future care options early.

In addition to the guidance, Louise has also launched a free consultation service for people looking for further support and advice on caring for someone with dementia. The helpline will see Louise and her team of dedicated professionals answer any questions and set up video calls to discuss support further where appropriate.

Louise said: “Taking on the role of a caregiver for a loved one with dementia is a profound act of kindness and commitment. It’s important to remember that you’re not alone – many have walked this path, and many will walk it after you. By educating yourself, establishing routines, and maintaining patience, you’re providing invaluable support that truly makes a difference. Remember, it’s okay to seek help and take time for yourself. This is not just beneficial for you; it’s essential for providing the best care to your loved one.”
