Exclusive interview with indie-folk pair Penny & Sparrow

Indie-folk duo Penny & Sparrow returned with their latest album, Lefty, on January 31 via I Love You / Thirty Tigers. The album quickly landed playlist support from Spotify, Apple Music, and SiriusXM, where Jeopardy’ found a home on The Coffee House. With over 109 million streams on Spotify, Andy Baxter and Kyle Jahnke have built a decade-long discography praised by NPR Music, CLASH, Wonderland, Out Magazine, and more. They’ve toured internationally, sharing stages with Josh Ritter, The Wood Brothers, and Johnnyswim, and playing iconic venues like The Ryman and Stubb’s. Childhood influences shaped their sound—Andy from choir, Kyle from classic rock radio—leading to a lush fusion of ethereal folk, cinematic balladry, and dark electronic textures, drawing comparisons to Sufjan Stevens, Bon Iver, and James Blake.

1. Tell us about you, how long have you been making music? What inspired you to start?

We’ve been making music since 2010 which is 15 years which is a long time! We started playing music together when Andy moved into my room while I was in grad school. We would occasionally play college parties and cover songs under the band name The Dallas Cowboys or The Utah Jazz. I don’t really know where the inspiration to write a song of our own came from, but I know we both didn’t think we’d be doing it 15 years later!

2. The music industry is super competitive these days, was there a moment in your life that you wanted to give up on music? How did you manage to stay focused and achieve what you want?

There wasn’t ever really a moment that we wanted to give up on music, because we never planned on having careers in music in the first place. In my opinion, we got to where we are now by playing lots of shows and trying to be as creatively prolific as possible.

3. How would you describe your creative processes? Are the music and lyrics written in conjunction, or separately?

No two songs are the same, but typically our process goes like this: Kyle will write the music and hum/sing the melody, record it in a voice memo and send it to Andy, and Andy will add lyrics to the melody. After that, there is lots of back-and-forth editing until we both love the song.

4. Where did the inspiration come from?

It came from all over the map – tons of songs, books, movies, paintings, experiences, conversations, you name it – have inspired the songs we make. You take it anywhere you can get it to be honest.

5. What’s next for you?

We’ll be on tour starting in April – mainly in the US both hopefully over in Europe later this year. Other than tour, we’ll be staying busy working on a few projects.
