8 – 12 October

Truman Brewery, London

2 September 2020, London – The Void of Desire, new project-based collaboration from emerging contemporary South Korean artist Minju Kim and British artist Eugene Wood, opens at the Truman Brewery in London from 8 – 12 October.

An exploration into the emotional, mental and physical impact of lockdown, Kim and Wood portray a bold luminosity in their work, inspired and informed by each other’s practice and as a response to this period of forced confinement and the void it has created. The exhibition features a series of paintings and sculptures that depicts the creative couple’s response to lockdown. The show also explores themes of light and darkness, reflecting how the artists have grappled with their own anxieties, and those of the world in its pandemic state.

The Void of Desire, at its core, is grounded in reflection. Particularly for Kim, who created the work before and during lockdown while simultaneously undergoing treatment for cancer. For Kim the show traces once again, a physical journey to recovery. Her paintings are a study of the human body and the medical technology that assisted her recovery. There are beautiful torso sculptures and a continued study of the anatomy. For Wood, the opportunity to collaborate with Kim for the first time breathed new life into his work with a series of beautiful abstract paintings that perfectly complement Kim’s mystical fascination with the human body.

South Korean born, London-based contemporary artist Minju Kim presented her first solo show, Anatomy of Desire, in London in 2018 and has exhibited extensively across the UK, USA and South Korea Eugene Wood has been exhibiting since 2011, most recently in a group show for the Bloomsbury Gallery in London.
