Outside Shoreditch: Tillery Park – East Austin's Hidden Gem

TilleryPark_FinalBill Roberts was an architect who dreamed of bringing the right people and elements together to
create one high-functioning space. Imagine a place where all of your day needs can be met
through one enjoyable visit. Introducing Tillery Park – a charming oasis tucked underneath the
East 7th Street bridge of Austin, TX.
Though commonly mistaken as just a plant nursery, there’s much more than meets the eye.
Bill’s vision is to foster a growing community that’s fast becoming an organic ecosystem in more
ways than one. Described as a “biodynamic, mixed-use venue”, it consists of two plant
nurseries (East Austin Succulents and Tillery Street Plant Company) and a host of small
businesses, artists and non-profits housed in adorable vintage and custom cottage-style trailers.
Current businesses include a clothing design and production studio/boutique (Nettie’s Cloth &
Elephas_AnneInk), a vintage boutique (Elephas Maximus), herbal products and handmade gifts (La Botanica)
and homemade juice, smoothies, tacos and tamales (The Juice Well). It doesn’t get more Austin
than this!
Additionally, the Park serves as an outdoor venue for live music and events. It’s already hosted
major events, such as the Austin Fashion Week Runway Show, Rubberneck Magazine events
and the East Austin Studio Tour. Construction began on a new indoor music and theatre facility
as well.
I ran into Nettie Tiso (of Nettie’s Cloth & Ink) who was kind enough to chat with me about her
work and what it’s like to be one of the first retailers in this unique community.
Nettie Screenprinting2_SophiaTell me about your background and how Nettie’s Cloth & Ink got started.
I always felt awkward in my clothes and decided to do something about it. I taught myself how to
sew (around age 10 or 11) using a family heirloom machine – a gorgeous 1940 Singer. I then
attended FIT in Manhattan, where I was taught professional technique.
Nettie’s Cloth & Ink got started about a year ago. The business model…allows me to operate as
a specialized fashion designer and screen printer in order to make ends meet and still (do) what
I love.

What’s your favorite thing about being part of Tillery Park?
We are all small business owners working very hard at what we love to do. We help and support
each other on several different levels…It’s a very optimistic, inspiring and motivating atmosphere
to work in.
Second, it’s a beautiful outdoor space. There’s nothing like it anywhere else in Austin. My shop
is in the middle of a plant nursery, surrounded by old gorgeous trees. Can’t get much better than
that.

Nettie Clothing_SophiaWhat inspires you right now?
Simple lines in design & desolate landscapes in nature. Anything that gives the mind some
space to imagine and explore.

Any upcoming events you’re excited about?
We’ll be hosting a few show nights during SXSW that’ll be sponsored by Rubberneck Magazine,
Hotel Vegas, and Tillery Park! What do you love about East Austin?
The businesses, the people, the food and music…I like that East Austin is so connected. Folks
here are dedicated to supporting the local businesses they love.
