Last week, a large collection of graffiti was painted over on a building bordering a car park between Fashion Street and Fournier Street.
There’s quite a few things Brick Lane is known for. But one of its biggest draws is the street art, with a constantly evolving mish mash of colours and characters on every spare piece of wall. This includes pieces from world famous artists like Banksy, ROA and Stik.
It might not seem like a big deal that one wall has been painted over, but it is part of a bunch of things that have been changing the character of Brick Lane. A couple of chain shops have popped up, local businesses are closing down, rent is raising and so on.
Of course things change and areas evolve. It just seems like a bit of a kick in the teeth to erase part of the reason why this area became so special, especially if profit is being made.
Apparently the building is up for rent.
