Stick ’em Up! A Paste-ups Exhibition in East London

Well Hung art gallery in Hoxton has been taken over by eight street artists which have one thing in common: paste-ups.

Gluing controversial art pieces on walls is fast becoming one of the main branches of street art, because of its simplicity, speed and the lower risk of getting a vandalism charge.

These detailed art pieces are prepared beforehand and the original work is actually pasted on the walls – not photocopies – as the gallery owner Nawfal explains.

Featured artists in this group exhibition are A.CE, Ben Rider, Donk, Hin, LUAP, My Dog Sighs, Pablo Delgado and Shuby.

The language of advertising and pop culture is a strong influence common to most of the pieces, which astonish the viewer with an overdose of colours and provocative messages.

In fact, what is street art without a satirical and controversial hint?

The Artists

A.CE draws inspiration from Dada collage and classic pop art and his work is a raw presentation of nostalgic imagery blended with a contemporary touch that reflects the absurdity of our consumerism culture.

Ben Rider’s fluorescent and vivid graphics are meant to insult the increasingly homogenized corporate world.

Donk’s work, a combination of photography, printmaking and hand finishing techniques, is focused more on universal themes of human strength, space, fantasy and vulnerability.

Hin’s strident work depicts corrupted and devilish characters through a childish and innocent style.

LUAP‘s pink teddy bear sneaks into the real world acting as a metaphor for discovery and exploration.

My Dog Sighs combines melancholic and often naive portraiture with the use of found materials.

Mexican Pablo Delgado’s characters are painted in a miniature style, creating a detailed narrative.

Shuby, on the other hand, is obsessed with bananas and bunnies, which are humorously blended into images inspired by the iconography of 50’s and 60’s film posters, retro advertising and pop images.
