South African based artist Ryan Hewett is renowned for his loose and vague style of portraiture. Having started out with pencil drawings he moved on to using oils and quickly become known for his expert blending and detailing skills with them. He doesn’t aim to capture the exact likeness of someone; he doesn’t even have people sit for him. Rather he starts with photographs and then prefers to paint from memory to allow for a more free creative process saying: “ The images need to evolve on the canvas.”
