Wild Wild West of East London: Red Dog Saloon

What do Sunday mornings remind you of? Early morning run in the park? Yeah right! Morning sleep? Long showers? Hangover? Whatever it may be you cannot ignore the importance of ALL DAY BREAKFAST. After all, it is Sunday and who sets their alarm to have breakfast on a Sunday morning? It’s bad enough that hotels are giving breakfast only until a ridiculous time before noon, restaurants should be more conscientious about this.
In Shoreditch you don’t have to worry about missing the breakfast. No matter what time you wake up just drag yourself to Hoxton Square (better if you get out of your PJs but no pressure, there isn’t a dress code), walk past the crowd waiting in front of the Breakfast Club – wait, don’t just walk past them. Stop and ask them what their problem is and why they are waiting in the cold to get some eggs and coffee. If you are a nice enough person you may even invite them to Red Dog Saloon, just a few minutes ahead which also happens to serve all day breakfast! The very existence of Red Dog Saloon must be to serve Southern style BBQs, ribs, burgers and chicken wings rather than breakfast but I can’t comment on their barbecues yet since the purpose of my visit was for the first meal of the day and for me it has to be breakfast, regardless of the time. They have a fulling breakfast menu (in terms of variety I mean, otherwise I did’t eat the whole menu) They have made all the possible combinations with eggs so the omelettes menu is quite rich. I got the Absolute omelette with three types of cheese: Swiss, Monterey Jack and cheddar in addition to mushrooms, onions, fresh bell peppers, avacado and tomatoes. It was moist but not undercooked and the avacados did a great job giving it a creamy taste. I don’t know how many eggs there were in there but when you’re in an American style diner big portions don’t come as a shock. All the omelettes are served with home fries nicely tossed with herbs. If you’re not into eggs you may check the a la carte menu. The Philly Cheesesteak was a strong opponent to the omelettes. However, the fresh onions sprinkled on top kind of ruined the taste so I’d recommend holding back the onions when you’re offered extra toppings.

If you’re up for a sweet tooth you can try their pancakes with various toppings; bananas, fresh blueberries or chocolate chunk all served with syrup and butter of course.

The bar looked very appealing (yes, even in the morning-let’s say early afternoon) but I have to pay them another visit to quench my thirst with some martinis. A Friday night sounds good since they have live jazz and blues music in the downstairs restaurant. They serve a number of bottled American beers such as Sierra Nevada and Sam Adams to name a couple and on tap they have Camden Pale Ale for the fans.

I had a pleasant breakfast experience in Red Dog, the food: nice and plenty! Service: fast and friendly. Atmosphere: Cosy with wooden walls and a couple of buffalo skulls – I think it’s time to reconsider my understanding of cosy! Skull-cosy?
