Join The Breakfast Club

I have a confession to make. Remember how I vaguely made fun of the queue in front of The Breakfast Club in Hoxton Square three weeks ago? (Reminder: Red Dog Saloon) Well, I was there last Sunday, queuing for food! But in my defense I was trying to get a sense of what all the fuss was about for the sake of the readers of this article (and not to enjoy a giant portion of pancakes!) Actually, the fact that The Breakfast Club is an American diner is quite ironic because it was like a scene from the Great Depression.

If you think about it, how much effort can someone spend for a breakfast? In my case sky is the limit. I set my alarm on a Sunday morning to hit the gym before “the breakfast” to deserve what I was about to eat. Then I took the bus to Spitalfields and was greeted by the sight of a food queue in front of da club in Artillery Lane. After waiting for half an hour in the cold and thanks to a few drop outs we were finally admitted in – twice as hungry!

One of the best things about the BC is that it’s one of the few places that serves breakfast all day long! As a side effect of hunger I had concentration problems and my brain functions had really slowed down so it took me quite a while to choose Eggs Benedict among many American classics. After cleaning my plate withing 5 minutes of the arrival of the food (no kidding) I was content with my choice. The eggs were done to a turn, not too runny or solid and the hollandaise sauce was so good that I almost licked my plate. I was torn between the poached egg with mushrooms, cherry tomatoes and parmesan and Eggs Benedict but there was no hollandaise sauce in the former one and I had to try it!

I had had a Pastrami Sandwich there earlier, on another occasion and having seen the photo two of our friends went for the Pastrami Sandwich-I don’t blame them.

Judging by the number of people inside I wasn’t expecting the service to be quick so delays in the arrival of food and drinks didn’t come as a surprise. The decor is classic American diner and I will not tell you the fact that the Smeg fridge by the counter is actually much more than a fridge! You didn’t hear this from me but it’s a secret passage to a secret downstairs bar. Shhh!

Needless to say the BC club doesn’t take reservations so get in the queue please!
