Shoreditch has never been short on cafes but this doesn’t mean we wouldn’t appreciate a good new cafe in the neighbourhood. To me cafes are shelters which you can take refuge in when you’re cold, tired, hungry or simply lonely so a new place where you can enjoy a cup of freshly brewed coffee as you read your favourite blog (Made in Shoreditch, needless to say!) is always good news.
Full Stop, whose owner Peter Duggan started off with Indie Coffee Cart near Edgeware Road, opened in 202 Bricklane mid-October 2011. I had been to Full Stop in December and back then they were still in the process of settling down and I paid my next visit this week to discover that they they’ve done a pretty good job. Stylish 60s decor, fresh flowers on the tables, home-made deserts and sandwiches and fresh coffee. What else would you expect from a coffee shop? If sobering up with coffee is not what you need they also have alcoholic drinks and the beer comes from Redchurch brewery – it couldn’t have been more local.
I had an amazing cup of flat white and in an attempt to be eccentric I ate a vegan cookie with raisins and oats. It was yummy and although they used bananas instead of eggs I couldn’t tell the difference from a regular evil cookie made with eggs.
There isn’t a menu so you can choose what to eat by checking out what they have on the counter. I have seen a couple of home-made sandwiches, croissants, pain aux raisins, brownies and home-made cookies. To be honest I wasn’t wowed by the variety of food but it’s so pleasant inside that you don’t need fancy food to become a regular at this place. I went on a weekday afternoon and maybe that’s why there were very few people inside, which made it very peaceful. I felt like sitting in my own living room (only with nicer furniture). A couple of things you should know about the place is that you have to order at the bar and you have to pay in cash. They don’t have a web site but you can follow them on Twitter @fullstopbar, make sure you do. Enjoy its peace and quiet while it lasts, take your book/laptop/kindle/any other screen you enjoy staring at and take position by the fireplace; you don’t need your mp3 player because the music is just as smooth as the flat white.
