Detour City

Dubstep electronica band Detour City have just released their debut video ‘Shadows’, have a remix of Bastille’s new single ‘Overjoyed’ in the
pipeline and are poised to make their mark on the live scene. Front woman and East-Londoner Tabitha Benjamin talks about how they achieved their mix of melodic beats and soaring vocals and what’s next for them in 2012.

How did you guys get together?

I was a singer-songwriter on the live scene in London for a few years playing gigs with likes of Ed Sheeran and started a remix project which turned into something more. I was totally sucked in to the possibilities of electronic music.

How would you describe your sound?

At its heart its electronica but I’m definitely influenced by Dubstep and Garage. I wanted to create music that was dark – the ‘Shadows’ video was influenced by Film Noir – and atmospheric but also had a good song structure and a full vocal. Actually I like to call it Noirstep!

Tell us more about the new video ‘Shadows’.

‘Shadows’ is futuristic sounding and dance orientated but pretty dark too. We really focused on creating sounds that were unusual but punchy. The song is about running from something that’s not real. We tried to reflect that in the video which is essentially about being on a road to nowhere.

The video was filmed up the road in Dalston right?

Yeah the video was filmed mainly on Ridely Road Market. It’s a really striking looking place at night and I’d always wanted to film a music video there.

You’ve got a remix for Bastille coming out too?

It’s their next single ‘Overjoyed’. I added my vocal to the track so it’s actually a ‘redux’ which is as posh remix. It was really great fun to do. Yeasayer and Distance have done the other remixes of the track so we’re definitely in good company.

What does 2012 hold for Detour City?

I’m going to have a bunch of live shows coming up in the next few months, so please look out for news on that front.

The Detour City Redux of Bastille’s Overjoyed is released 29 April
