A last minute decision to take a dinner out with my friend Nat posed the usual problem. A quick look at my emails reminded me of a conversation that we had about The Greek Restaurant in Spitalfields. After quick arrangements we made our way to the place.
We arrived on the early side for dinner , friendly waiter greeted us and offered refreshments. The restaurant contains medium sized room including comfortable sitting area , if you want to have to dinner outside there is a place for that too . Our table sat nicely in a alcove overlooking the bar. Lively music contributed to the vibrant atmosphere. Nats eyes alighted immediately on the dessert menu – a mistake as she decided that she would have it after the main course. Undeterred we selected Peloponnese 3 storey plate for two which included Crudites, Htipiti that is made by traditional method of “beating” the cheese with a mortar and pestle . In the event we chose Lamb Kefte which was cooked in mouthwatering herb mix. Nat declared that lamb was one of the most delicious she ever tasted. In addition we got Tiropitakia. There are a variety of cheese pies made in Greece, but this is one made with cheese filling and touch of cinnamon ( we guessed ) which add such a delicate fresh note . And the filo was wonderful crispy and airy. The quality of the cheese make the filling ‘Yum’.
I surveyed the wine list , which not confined to the usual Italian culprits , but included nice selection of Greek wines . In the event I have chosen a mellow Silenus ‘Beta’ Vilana from Crete which complemented our meal well.
When it came to desert I was determined to try Baklava and Nat went for Chocolate mousse cake, the size of it just makes it very special. Need I say more?!? As I explained to a my friend , you’ve gotta kiss a few frogs before finding a prince. Fortunately The Real Greek desserts were really princely – we loved them.
To sum up , even though restaurant was busy – always a good sign- service was excellent. The food was freshly prepared and all the dishes carefully presented. A friendly restaurant manager Adam stopped by and enquired how we enjoyed our meal and we chatted for a minute. In short, good value for a full service restaurant meal and we will certainly return. If you are visiting Shoreditch for a dinner you should give The Real Greek a try.
