The sport that is animating the East-end area has now come to Shoreditch as well, with the exhibition Athletes: Action: Art on in Redchurch street. This exhibition placed in the heart of Shoreditch is concerning sport and athletes on the move and will be on for the whole duration of the Olympics.
The majority of pictures exposed represent athletes on the move while playing their sports. As far as tennis is concerned, for example, the movements of Jimmy Connors, Lleyton Hewitt, Serena and Venus Williams are definitely realistic and impressive. The exhibition is not fucusing just on tennis and cricket, but there are other paintings regarding scenes of everyday life, like children playing in a swimming pool.
All the pictures displayed in the exhibition has been made by Rosemary Taylor an artist born in Zimbawe in 1933 and grew up in South Africa. On her early 20s she moved to London where she begun her artistic career, based in Islington. Rosemary died in west Cork in 2004. One of her best friend Kay Davemport, form Texas, has now organized this exhibition in the area.
“Rosemary was interested in movements and sport. That’s the main reason behind all these paintings. All these paintings have been made in a range of time that goes untill the Australian Open in 2003,” says Kay. She pick players up at the top of their career, she studied their movements while they were playing and she drew it.”
“Why I choose Shoreditch to place my exhibition? Shoreditch is a very lively area, with so many things going on that I can really say what I prefer. From the Columbia and Brick Lane market, to the new Shoreditch Boxpark, everything in here is so lively and interesting. I think that the expansion that the area is living right now, will definitely lead to a big future for the Shoreditch.”
The exhibition will be on untill the 11th of August, you can visit it from Monday to Saturday (100.00 to 18.00) and on Sunday from 10.00 to 16.00. You can also find out all the exhibitions and paintings of Rosemary at
