The Home Of Fine Dining Just Moments From Shoreditch – 1901 Restaurant

It’s always nice to mix business with pleasure and that is just what we did when I visited the 1901 restaurant at Liverpool Street. I called ahead to make reservations to make sure that there were no problems with my evening. It was a date ,  I wanted to introduce my girlfriend to a wonderful restaurant minutes from Shoreditch. I was not disappointed with her reaction to the beautiful and pristine atmosphere. We seated not quite directly beneath the stained glass cupola, but the Rotunda in which we were seated allowed a view and a delightful place to see and be seen by the patrons of this fine restaurant.

As an appetizer I had a Brandy Alexander and she had a  Singapore sling. I wasn’t sure about any of the cuisine or the portions, but I surely wanted to make sure that we had room for the gourmet offerings. We enjoyed our drinks and took the time to notice the ornate architecture of the building that seemed to be accentuated by the stark bareness of the room. This design seemed to constantly draw the eye upward to the tops of the columns and the beautiful dome of glass. We shared the Gressingham Duck Broth with pistachio dumplings. The delectable truffle flavour was aromatic in my mouth. It seemed that I could smell and taste the truffles in my mouth at the same time.

For the main course I had The amazing Sea Bass.  It was pan-fried and served with chorizo, chick peas, fondant potatoes and creamy orange foam. I enjoyed my dish with a delicious glass of Riesling. My girlfriend had Guinea Fowl Breast Roulade,  hers was served with duck stuffing, cranberries,  a Swede puree and a peppercorn sauce. She could only praise and congratulate the chef who designed her dish. She was delighted with the surprising mix of flavours. Of course the presentation of both of our plates reminded us that there was so much more to come, and it was such a pleasure to eat with our eyes as well as our mouths.

For dessert we shared their Deconstructed Banoffee. This delightful and playful version of an English standard reminded us of the fine dining experience. This was not the same dessert that our grandmother had made, but it put us in remembrance of this traditional dessert while it delighted our palettes. It was served with dark chocolate and banana ganache drizzled with Bailey’s fudge sauce. She enjoyed a glass of  2002 Tokaji from Hungary , I had a glass of Malmsey Blandy’s 15-year-old from Portugal.

It has long been my tradition to end a fine meal with a cup of coffee. At this time, however, I chose to settle with a double espresso. Much the ascension from my coffee at home, the smooth delivery of the strong flavor of espresso was a delight to this coffee devotee. All-in-All the evening was delightful, and I was able to impress my girlfriend with a unforgettable memory  just few steps from our favourite Shoreditch.
