2012 was quite a year for film, with many of the year’s popular award winners garnering immense praise from critics. It may seem like just a month ago that Silver Linings Playbook was charming us in the cinema, but the reality is we’re well into the 2013 film season. The likes of Lincoln and Django are behind us, already on DVD and perhaps on their way to streaming services such as pictureboxfilms.com. Now we’re in the summer season of sequels, sci-fi, action and suspense. So here are a few films you can look forward to seeing while you gorge yourself on popcorn this summer!
This Is The End
This wacky apocalyptic comedy features young American comic stars James Franco, Jonah Hill, Seth Rogen, and all their friends playing slightly fictionalized versions of themselves. The premise: the apocalypse strikes during a massive party at Franco’s LA home, and the main cast must survive.
Man Of Steel
Probably the most anticipated film of 2013, Man Of Steel hopes to kick off the next great superhero franchise. Zack Snyder (Watchmen, 300) directs, though the name drawing fans will likely be that of Batman mastermind Christopher Nolan (relax folks, he’s producing, not directing). Henry Cavill stars as Superman himself.
World War Z
Based on the popular novel by Max Brooks, this is a world-spanning thriller about a man named Gerry Lane (Brad Pitt) who hopes to save the world from a zombie apocalypse.
The Lone Ranger
You may have noticed the not-so-subtle way in which the trailer reminds you that this film comes from the “team that brought us” Pirates of the Caribbean. Indeed, Jerry Bruckheimer produces, Gore Verbinski directs, and Johnny Depp stars (as Tonto) in this American west adventure film. Armie Hammer, the lone man behind The Social Network’s Winklevoss twins, plays the Lone Ranger in what looks to be a non-stop action adventure flick.
Pacific Rim
Basically, it’s Transformers meets Ironman meets Cloverfield? Guillermo del Toro directs this futuristic film about massive monsters threatening humanity, and the massive metal machines/robots humans construct for their own defense.
Elysium
Matt Damon is Max De Costa in a futuristic world in which upper class humans live on “Elysium,” a massive utopian space station, and the rest are left to suffer on a poverty-stricken and ruined Earth. De Costa must find a way to reach Elysium and alter the system. On the one hand, it’s just more future Earth sci-fi, but this one actually looks quite compelling.
Jobs
In what looks like an attempt to kick off the award-seeking-film season a bit early, Jobs is set for a late summer release. The film will feature Ashton Kutcher playing the part of late Apple mastermind Steve Jobs.
