G: Tell us about the project? What did inspire you to start?
Judith, the creator, noticed online dating was consistently leading her to short lived relationships and wondered if it was because the way an online profile presents a person, or her parameters for reading one, weren’t working. She started experimenting with how she chose potential mates and ended up landing on smell as a winning indicator making her wonder – what if we chose matches based on smell?
G: What is unique about your project?
We are the first dating night of its kind that uses pheromones as a way to find a potential match. We are overwhelmed how a little experiment has turned into an actual event that is now travelling across the pond to the UK!
G: What would you say has been your most memorable experience while developing this project?
The sheer volume and diversity of the global response to the concept has been a crazy experience – mainly indicating a striking dissatisfaction of contemporary dating methods and a curiosity and hunger for new approaches.
G: Why do you choose Shoreditch to do this?
We always wanted to hold the first UK Pheromone Party in East London as it is the thriving creative hub of London. We also knew the audience that would fully embrace the experimental nature of the Pheromone Parties would be the creative community around London Fields.
G: Who/what are your favorite Artists/Businesses in the area?
Shoreditch is such a vibrant area and constantly has wonderful art and businesses popping up. Redchurch Street is probably the best road in that area, hosting the best galleries, eateries and boutiques. Parisian perfumery Etat Libre D’Orange opened its first UK boutique on the street last summer and we are super excited that they are on board with the first UK Pheromone Party. Every Londoner and visitor needs to visit this “gallery of scents” to hear about the story behind each carefully crafted scent and experience their senses actually come to life. Other favourites are independent graphic arts publishing company Nobrow, events and exhibition space Red Gallery, music and art venue Village Underground, independent music store Rough Trade, arts organisation Rich Mix, Stories sister venue The Book Club; vintage haven Beyond Retro and the best cafe/bar The Bridge.
G: What are your favourite places in the area?
Broadway Market is one of the most beautiful and interesting areas in London. Every weekend there is a market which hosts a kaleidoscope of tastes and cultures offering some of the best food and most original clothing in London. Stories, where we are holding the event is definitely our favourite venue – they also make awesome smoothies and delicious brunch! Other favourites are the Dove for a great Sunday roast, Climpson & Sons for freshly brewed coffee, Netil House for their creative spaces and events, Oval Space for their fantastic music shows and Broadway Bookshop – a small but beautiful independent bookshop. There are so many other amazing independent shops in this area.
G: What does the future have in store for you and Shoreditch?
The future looks bright for us in London. Our next event will take place at Stories on Tuesday 15th July and we are looking at some interesting pop-up collaborations.
