This is Winter Sun – an un-Christmas celebration of the shortest days of the year. If you can’t take any more tinsel, if you can’t skate and definitely don’t want to visit Santa, this is the perfect way to enjoy the season. Designed by artists James Bowthorpe and Kim Coleman with help from architect Andrew Lock, this installation, social space and bar has landed in Granary Square, Kings Cross, for just 8 weeks. Open Monday – Saturday 11am-11pm, and Sunday 11am-4pm, Winter Sun is inspired by our need for light in the darkness of winter. Winter Sun offers a place to gather together in a temporary structure of ever-changing light. The endlessly dimming and brightening social space is encircled by twelve glowing ‘suns’ emulating natural light. Some suns approximate daylight, others continuously simulate daybreak, and those in darkened corridors – like moons – are illuminated using recorded light from around the structure projected back into the space.
The social space at the heart of the installation is serves warming drinks and snacks. You’ll find fine teas, coffee from around the world and specialist hot and cold cocktails with locally-sourced ingredients such as honey, horseradish and winter fruits. High-quality ales, lagers and ciders are also available, including award-winning Hallets and 21 Guns American IPA, as well as traditional British pies, scotch eggs and sausage rolls.
