It’s a feeling most people know all too well. Standing in front of a wardrobe that is bursting at the seams and yet somehow, bafflingly, there is nothing to wear! The “I-have-nothing-to-wear” dilemma is often laughed at by impatient boyfriends or dismissed by the less fashion conscious. But, as it turns out, there may be more validity to this feeling than has been previously acknowledged. A variety of reasons might be leading to you spending more time than you care to admit in front of your wardrobe each morning, tearing the items of clothing off their hangers until your room resembles a tornado swept war zone. Sometimes, you may feel you have nothing to wear because…
…none of your clothes suit the person you are supposed to be that day.
Apparently there are certain people who have found their personal style, and this style is perfectly adaptable to every situation in life. Others haven’t quite found the perfect harmony between their appearance and their personality or are simply a little more experimental. Some days they might want to channel 60s hippie chic and the next 90s grunge. Perhaps a certain bar calls for your inner biker to be released, while a job interview requires understated elegance. Chances are, not everyone has the perfect outfit for every occasion and every whim. So yes, your wardrobe may be overflowing, but if you’re usually more Kim K and today you’re feeling Mary-Kate Olsen’s oversized extravagance, you might still be left feeling disappointed.
…your clothes could do with some TLC.
Everybody does it. At the end of the day when you have changed into your PJs, and you carefully selected outfit ends up in a ball on the floor rather than neatly folded back in the drawers. While this is a perfectly understandable offense, it can leave your clothes a little dishevelled. Paired with the day to day wear and tear and the occasional silk top that ends up in the washing machine despite the care instruction telling you to carefully hand wash it in lukewarm water, your clothes can quickly end up in less than pristine condition. So although that soft woolly jumper may have been your pride and joy when you first bought it, it’s now a scratchy, stained mess only suitable for lazy Sundays. Perhaps showing your favourite items the occasional bit of love by getting them dry cleaned will keep them in wearable condition that little bit longer. And “I don’t have time” is no longer an excuse in the days when some companies will pick up and deliver your dry cleaning to your doorstep.
…your wardrobe is just too damn cluttered.
No I am not going to sing the praises of a capsule wardrobe. The belief that every item in your wardrobe should be justified by matching every single other item is just far too constricting. By that train of thought there is no way for a fringed suede vest to coexist with an Audrey Hepburn inspired midi skirt, and that’s a world no one wants to live in. At the same time a well organised wardrobe does provide certain benefits, and the appeal of being able to match ten outfits with a sweeping glance is undeniable. So while eliminating all items that provide any extra frills seems excessive, perhaps the time has come to get rid of the American Apparel lycra bodysuit gathering dust in the back of your wardrobe?
