In order to help your NYE party planning, crisp company Tyrrells, has surveyed the good folk of London to discover the magic ingredients that are the key to hosting the ultimate party.

Who to invite is the first thing many people think of and when it comes to dream celebrity invites, Prince Harry tops the poll, with over a third (33%) choosing the cheeky royal redhead as the celebrity they feel would guarantee a rip-roaring party. Motor mouth presenter Jonathan Ross comes in a close second with 1 in 9 choosing the fellow Londoner as their celebrity guest.

Next up is setting a date – how much notice do you give your guests? Not very much it turns out, as a third voted for a spontaneous party over a planned one.

ABBA’s Dancing Queen is still riding high on party playlists, taking the top spot as the favourite song to get a party going. A third (31%) voted for the classic 70s pop hit, with Village People’s YMCA, coming in a close second receiving 25% of the votes, proving the theory that cheesy classics are still the best to get a party going.

Just make sure you don’t play wartime favourite Vera Lynn’s ‘We’ll Meet Again’ as your guests will be swiftly making for the exit with 22% voting it the song most likely to kill the party.

On the subject of music, it turns out Londoners are pretty shameless when it comes to throwing some cheesy shapes on the dance floor, as retro classic, the YMCA, triumphed in the dance moves category with 21% voting it as the move that means the party is in full swing. Travolta’s disco moves from Saturday Night Fever are close behind attracting 20% of the votes – once again proving that despite London’s seemingly cool image,

When it comes to party nibbles ditch the caviar – just 7% think it’s the ideal food to serve at a party. The most popular foods include good old fashioned sausages rolls, (33%) and posh crisps with dips (31%) coming in at a close second!

Londoners like to keep the party going as 19% vote between 2am-4am as the ideal time to finish a party, compared to only 9% for rest of the South East.  Londoners may like to party, but not as much as the Irish. Northern Ireland lives up to the Irish party spirit with a whopping 32% voting to keep the party going past 2am.

There are some things guests really shouldn’t do at a party including: thinking you are the DJ and plugging in your iPhone – 39% voted this as one of the worst things to do at a party. Other bad party etiquette to avoid includes: trying it on with the host’s partner and helping yourself to food in the kitchen. The rule of thumb here seems to be keeping your hands to yourself on all accounts.

But it seems what really makes a party is: Laughter (41%), good music (39%) and spontaneity (31%) as voted the top elements that turn an average get-together into a proper shindig!
