Sculptor Herb Williams uses a unique medium for his sculptures: crayons. In what he names the ‘Call of Couture,’ Williams has created a pack of hounds bearing a couture fashion label.

Williams was born in Montgomery, AL, and now lives and works in Nashville, TN. Though he works with several materials, he is one of the only people with an account with Crayola. His designer dogs are made out of individual crayons. His sculptures may be comprised of hundreds or thousands of crayons. The sculptures are textured with either the sharp or flat end of the crayon pointing outward.

His haute hounds are spattered with color and texture, along with the symbols of Louis Vuitton, Chanel and Prada. Iconic Burberry plaid coats one pup head to tail. Greyhound, poodle and french bulldog are just a few breeds of the brands. Besides animals, he has created mosaics and wildfire sculptures. Williams calls crayons a ‘gateway drug.’

“Intriguing questions arise when an object associated with childhood, such as a crayon, is used to address issues dealing with more adult matters, such as sexuality, religion, and social hierarchy. The sculptures are childlike in their curious approach to the object as icon, but beguiling and satisfying to me in the use of pure color as form,” stated Williams.
