“I got 99 problems but an o$car ain’t one!” is written on the wall at the corner of Great Eastern Street and Curtain Road in Shoreditch. It is part of a larger artwork by the London street artist, Pegasus.
To respond to the #oscarssowhite celebrity boycotts of the ceremony, Pegasus will be exhibiting his 3-meter by 3-meter artwork. The piece will be outside of the Dolby Theater in Hollywood, where the 88th Academy Awards will be this Sunday, 28th February.
The painting was created earlier this month and shows an emaciated baby in a cracked tub looking up at the Academy Award in his hand. It was made to confront the celebrities that are boycotting the awards because no black or minority actors were nominated in the four acting categories for the second year in a row.
Addressing this issue and his resulting artwork, Pegasus said, “I am against all forms of discrimination, but I feel the actors and actresses who are a part of the privileged Hollywood system should consider the fact that we have many more pressing matters at hand in our world today. I simply wanted to give a voice to the unheard by touching on one of many issues involving extreme poverty and world hunger.”
