The new Premier League season is finally underway after an unusual summer and transfer window. Most teams have now played their first two games, with the exception of those in Manchester.
While it is still too early to tell which team will come out on top this year, these games have helped us to get a better understanding of their chances. Five clubs have won both of their first two games, two of them are from London: Arsenal and Crystal Palace.
Most bookmakers are giving Manchester City the best odds to win the league this year with Liverpool close behind them. These two clubs have dominated English football in the last few years, winning just about all of the silverware between them.
During this time, the London teams haven’t had a look in. Last season, Chelsea finished a distant fourth, 33 points behind Liverpool, while in 2018-19 they won 11 games less than Manchester City. Arsenal has fared even worse, finishing no higher than fifth in the last few seasons.
Could this change in 2020/21? What are the chances for London teams this season?
Chelsea
Chelsea are currently third favourites to win the Premier League, according to most bookmakers. In their first two games of the season, they managed a 3-1 victory against Brighton but then lost 2-0 against Liverpool.
Their next few games are against West Brom, Crystal Palace, and Southampton, all matches that they should easily win. Though they will face Manchester United in late October, which could make for some interesting Live Betting at Betsafe during the game.
They’ve signed several new players during the transfer window, including Ben Chilwell, Thiago Silva, Malang Sarr, Hakim Ziyech, and Timo Werner, which should strengthen their chances.
Arsenal
Like Chelsea, Arsenal have been strengthening their squad during the transfer window. Their two biggest signings are Gabriel Magalhaes who will strengthen the defense, and the striker Willian.
They’ve got off to a good start, winning both of their first games, though neither could be considered difficult challenges for the runners. Their first real test will be on 28th September when they will face Liverpool at Anfield.
Most bookmakers are currently giving them the fourth-best odds to win the Premier League, just behind Chelsea. If they can beat some more difficult rivals in the coming weeks, those odds may improve further.
Tottenham
Tottenham have never won the Premier League, but they’ve been contenders several times. Most recently, they finished third in 2017-18, behind Manchester United and Manchester City.
They’ve won one of their first two games, beating Southampton 5-2 but losing 1-0 against Everton. They face Manchester United in early October which will be a test of their abilities this year, which may give us better insight into their chances.
They’ve spent £85.86 million in the current transfer window, acquiring 10 new players, including the left-back Sergio Reguilon from Real Madrid and Giovani Lo Celso from Real Betis. They’ve also acquired Gareth Bale on loan from Real Madrid who will strengthen their attacking capabilities.
Tottenham are currently 6th favourite to win the Premier League, behind Manchester United.
Three London clubs do have a chance this season, though, with Manchester City and Liverpool on top form, they face a tough challenge.
