From March 17th through March 27, The Brick Lane Gallery will present an exhibition of paintings by Lisi Ruppel. The first exhibition in the UK of the Canarian artist showcases ‘How do you feel?’, a series of abstract paintings that seeks to create a dialogue between the observer and the artist about emotions, through the canvas.
In ‘How do you feel?’, the universality of the psychology of colour creates general links between each of the works and the observer. However, the artist gives the public a free hand to connect intimately with each of the pieces, due to the possibility of subjectively interpreting the spontaneous forms of the paint.
The series is inspired entirely by the personal experience of the artist, who after many hours of reflection identified which were her primary emotions, the most present in her. This analysis also allowed her to approach the collectivity of emotions, which connect us with the rest of humanity as a whole.
Inherent to the human condition, emotions can be a gateway to personal and social development. Managing anger, sadness or anxiety is a shared desire, but so is finding love and happiness in everyday things.
“Fluid painting is therapeutic for me. I can decide the speed or the way I pour the paint onto the canvas, but I have no control over the final result. For perfectionists like me, it is a very liberating technique”, says the Spanish-German artist Lisi Ruppel. “It also allows me to channel my emotions, which has been fortunate during these years of fear, uncertainty and loss of contact with our loved ones”.
About the artist
Lisi Ruppel is a Spanish-German self-taught artist. A sociologist with a master’s degree in graphic design, her academic career is in line with her two passions: human behaviour and visual arts. Her work explores, through vibrant colours and from self-expression, the relationship between human emotions and the psychology of colour. From the tranquillity of her studio in the canarian mountains, the artist enjoys experimenting with different techniques. Lisi Ruppel is currently focused on fluid painting, creating spontaneous shapes and combinations that arise from her emotions and in which colour takes centre stage.
