London dance school changing the world of dance: inclusive dance and fitness for all

Dance is a great way for children and adults to learn a new skill, keep fit and meet new people. Despite some of the perceptions around dance classes – they don’t have to be intimidating or expensive – and you don’t need to have previous training to get involved! There are plenty of big name schools out there – but they often come with strict attitudes and big price tags which can be off putting for first time dancers and those just looking to give something new a go.

Adore Dance London, based in Hackney Wick, wants to shift the narratives around dance schools with a friendly and accessible space for all:

“We don’t want dance to be seen as something that’s high pressure. Classes should be welcoming for everyone, but still maintaining top tuition from qualified teachers – all without breaking the bank.” Joe Watson, Co-Founder, said.

Instructor and Principal Connor Taylor has a background in professional ballet, having performed at renowned venues such as Sadler’s Wells and The Royal Opera House. As one of few professional male teachers, and having overcome insecurities around his cleft palate, his vision was to offer a more inclusive route into dance.

“Dance should be for everyone, no matter your background. What matters isn’t aiming for some idea of perfection, but the ability to take pride in your achievements, make lasting connections and just have fun.” Connor said.

After sharing his story for Cleft Palate Awareness Week, Connor has already received feedback from parents who say his story has given their children boosts of hope and confidence. Plus, since starting the school, both Joe and Connor have seen students make new friends and go on to socialise outside of classes.

“Coming out of the pandemic, lots of people have been struggling with loneliness – especially those who’ve only recently moved to the city. Dance is a great way to combat this and it’s been amazing to watch a real community forming around lessons.” Joe said.

Adore Dance hope they can start to change the world of dance for the better. They offer a selection of classes for all abilities, including:

Georgina Turier-Duerden, Barre Instructor at Adore Dance said “My Barre classes at Adore Dance are all about feeling great! The small group sizes really create a team atmosphere and I love the sense of everyone being in it together, getting moving and having fun. With my playlist of bangers you’ll be singing through the burn without realising 45 minutes is gone before you know it.”

Ballet

For many when you think of ballet you think of strict instructors shouting orders and expecting nothing short of perfection. With Adore Dance, each and every lesson is set to be a fun and inclusive space. It doesn’t matter if you’re not on your way to the royal ballet – come and make new friends and share a common love of dance.

Led by professional ballet dancer and qualified instructor, Connor Taylor, classes offer high quality teaching. But Connor also knows that there can be a lot of expectation that comes with ballet, he hopes to inspire others to boost their confidence through dance without the strict formalities of many central London schools.
