Bibi Ahmed’s intricate wearable art is a love letter to her Kenyan heritage

Shanga by designer Bibi Ahmed shown at NOW Gallery in London as part of London Design Festival 2022.

Ahmed weaves intricate patterns and shapes with beads to create elaborate corsets, hats and accessories. The Shanga kiosk is inspired by the vivid Mpesa booths in Kenya and will be adorned with Ahmed’s beaded sculptural works. The vibrant installation draws from Ahmed’s Kenyan heritage, paying homage to her childhood surroundings that have shaped her sense of colour, patterns and designs. Having made an impeccable impression on R&B and soul singer Erykah Badu, Bibi’s work has been worn extensively by Badu herself celebrating the luxury of African craftsmanship.

Born and raised in Mombasa, Kenya before moving to the UK, Bibi’s practice has been heavily influenced by her grandmother who housed Somalian refugees in her house. Ahmed found inspiration in her family’s kindness and started to empower local women by helping them become financially independent. Ahmed saw so much talent within the local community and the fine skills and handiwork of women. Inspired by her grandmother’s kindness and her dedication to helping others, she realized she could help the women making these beautiful goods by partnering with them and helping design and sell handcrafted goods consecutively allowing them gain financial independence.
