The Whitechapel Murders
Apart from its claim to fame as a cultural area, Whitechapel is infamous for the Whitechapel murders. Those of you who recognise this series of brutal killings will be aware that this was the hunting ground of Jack the Ripper. Over a period spanning 1888 to 1891, there were eleven murders, five of which were definitively linked to Jack the Ripper, a name the suspect called himself in a letter to the Central News Office. The term, Canonical Five, was given to these five victims. All of them died within nine weeks of each other. All of them were interred in cemeteries in East London.
