    On October 24, 2011, a photography competition was launched to solicit mobile phone photographs for a brand new public exhibition space called The Vertical Gallery, located in London’s uber-trendy Shoreditch and Hoxton – the gateway to the London Olympics.

    One of my favourite things happens to be my noble Sunday outings in Brick Lane with a ‘pit-stop’ at the Spitalfields market, and a stroll along the Truman Brewery dressed in my crumbled hangover attire. I always walk up till the end of the road, richly rewarding myself with a brave fishbowl at Casa Blue or a coffee at the Swedish Fika with an angelic bagel next door. One daring afternoon which happened to be my morning after an eventful night out, I managed to gather some energy to proceed to the Red Church Street, where I found a brilliant store called Concrete Hermit, managed by a lovely bloke, Chris Knight.

    Dining in Shoreditch: Funky Asia

    Located near the Spitalfields Market on Commercial Street, Funky Asia seems at first glance like a cross between a diner and a discotheque. Upon entering this vast, rustic space ridden with fluorescent lights, I didn’t know quite what to expect. I had heard that the place specialized in Pan-Asian cuisine, but nothing in the ‘vibe’ of this place seemed to communicate that. As well, the fact that all the waiters and waitresses were conspicuously Indian certainly didn’t elucidate things for me, and as I was ushered to my table amidst a hollow, empty space, I couldn’t help but feel confused.

    PIAS Fire Benefit at Favela Chic

    Last Wednesday, I went to the Richard Norris and Label Love PIAS Fire benefit at Favela Chic. I was looking forward to it as it had the potential to be a smashing evening - the line-up, venue and cause were all great. AIM had funded the evening to raise money for UK independent music labels whose music was lost in the riots on August 9th when the main PIAS warehouse was destroyed.

    Plus Arts Projects Presents 'Neon & Vinyl'

    The Londonewcastle Project Space is a gallery and exhibition space in Shoreditch created by property brand Londonewcastle as a platform for creatives and artists to display their work and further their practice. The gallery is donated to users who might not otherwise have the opportunity to show their work and forms part of the ongoing local cultural discourse.

    There are so many reasons why I love Shoreditch: the braggards, the hipsters, the charity mums, the Sunday flower market jaunters. Shoreditch is not just a pastiche; it is a living organism that with every day awakes, kicking and screaming to life, reminding the world of what a unique, if somewhat troublesome child it is.

    Dining in Shoreditch: High 'n Dry

    So, in the heart of vibrant Shoreditch I found an oasis called Jamies [sic]. The first thing you see are the twin staircases spiralling up to a corridor resembling a New Orleans veranda or the front of a Mexican hacienda - only, somehow disappointingly, the pastel green doors did not open into the luxuriant beauty of a South American inner courtyard nor the warm interior of a Creole house, but to a selection of stylish, beautifully decorated, perfectly functional toilets. The staircases are, I imagine, an exercise in equilibrium on a Friday night. The only way you can survive the twisting and turning of those steps is by ordering just the right amount of food to go with your wine.

    Looking to the north City of London star! People busy, lights flashing, loud noise. A burst of aromas in the air, where the crossroads meet. From the old skool vintage to the new age fashion rebel. Just classic! What else can I say? Shoreditch! There. I said it. Just waiting to arrive from Liverpool street bitting my finger nails with excitement, craving that night life and the pounding tunes.
