Yin and Yang Yoga in Shoreditch

Walking into Frame dance and fitness studios, I am greeted by Val on reception, who instantly makes me feel at ease. The booming voices of the instructors barking their commands over the thud, thud, thud of dance music can be heard coming from the other studios. The class I took was Yin and Yang Yoga. The teacher for this class was Naimh Kavanagh. Softly spoken, her lilting voicemade me feel instantly feel relaxed. As she encouraged us to “breathe from our hearts, not our heads” I could feel the stresses of life slowly releasing from my body. The class uses the flow method, where you breathe to move yourself into each position, and involved plenty of Cobra and Warrior poses to ensure maximum stretching.

The best aspect of Naimh’s class was that once she had talked us through the flow, we were able to go at our own pace. Most other yoga classes you might find yourself struggling to keep up or, worse still, injuring yourself. If the stresses of life and the expense of Christmas are starting to worry you, I would definitely recommend this class. I spent the rest of the day feeling taller, lighter and having rediscovered muscles whose existence I had forgotten.

I have it on good authority that the usual teacher for this class, Olivia, is more dynamic (in layman’s terms: ‘a lot more hard-core’), so I would recommend it for those who have been practising regularly, or those who like a challenge.
