Abjects are Noemi (Spain) on vocals and guitar, Yuki (Japan) on bass and Matt (New Zealand) on drums. Our sound packs elements of surf, punk, garage rock, shoegaze and psych into songs just over 2 min long.
It all started as a bedroom project, a daily exercise to learn how to write songs. The premises were to keep it as raw and fresh as possible (that’s what the skills and experience allowed at the time) and write and record a song every evening in just 2 or 3 hours.
The lyrics are inspired in the teenage rebellion songs of the proto-punk bands of the 60s. Songs about love, lust and frustration like The Seeds ‘I can’t seem to make you mine’ and ‘Pushin’ Too Hard’, The Chocolate Watchband ‘I’m not like everybody else’ or ‘Misty Lane’ or The Standells ‘Medication’ and ‘Sally Tease’, but passed through a female perspective.
The attitude draws from the DIY ethos and irreverence of punk culture in the 70s and early 80s (The Stooges, Buzzcocks, Pylon, Teenage Jesus and The Jerks, No Wave).
The band formed in early 2013 when Yuki joined on bass ignoring the fact that she never held a guitar before. Matt, originally a guitarist, picked up the drums just for fun and cause we needed him.
Abjects makes reference at being happy with oneself even if outside of the norms and standards of society. It’s an ode to an individualist and nonconformist view of life. It sounds punk and cult at the same time and we like that.
Our first gig was in March at our friend’s birthday. He’s an improv musician and organised a ‘Krautrock Karaoke’ to which he invited members of TOY, Scum, The Oscillation, Screaming Tea Party, Let’s Wrestle and Chrome Hoof to jam. We opened the night and it was great to share bill with all of them in our debut. A week after we received our first airplay at the Matt Barnes’ Indie Show on the Roundhouse Radio. Soon after, we got picked up by PINS to release our first EP “Fast Love” in cassette which is very exciting. We’ve supported Mikal Cronin at The Lexington and The Fresh & Only’s at Cargo and we’re going to be joining PINS in part of their UK tour in October.
