CLOUD by Caitlind r.c. Brown and Wayne Garrett

An incandescent cloud shines with the light of reclaimed light bulbs. 6,000 to be exact. CLOUD is an interactive sculpture originally showcased in Canada. It was created by Canadian artists Caitlind r.c. Brown and Wayne Garrett with burnt out bulbs collected from their community.

The innovative CLOUD has everyday light bulbs and old-fashioned pull string switches. The sculpture gives people a chance to turn the bulbs on and off, making the cloud flicker and shift like a real storm cloud in the sky. The artists asked “audiences to reconsider household items in an alternative context,” said the artists on their website.

The crowds at the CLOUD’s various exhibitions work together to animate “lightning” on the sculpture by turning the cloud on and off.

Incandescent light bulbs are being phased out in the EU and other countries, making the thousands of bulbs in the CLOUD a reminder of the world’s changing technology.
