Ahead of her debut solo show in Shoreditch next month, Made in Shoreditch caught up with Birmingham based artist Annatomix for a quick chat…
BM: Tell us about your artwork: What do you do? What inspired you to start?
AT: I sketch, design, draw, illustrate, paint, render, cut, carve, sculpt, form, stick, screw and hammer. All inspired by love, loss, life, death, evolution, time and space, sound, philosophy, theology, mathematics, physics, quantum mechanics and science fiction.
BM: What were your most successful project/exhibition so far, or what projects did you enjoy the most so far?
AT: The whole of 2014 was pretty successful for me thankfully but I was especially proud of the public commission wall in Bournemouth. It was an honour to be invited to do it and an even bigger one to know that the local community love it. At 7 x 11 metres, it was my biggest wall to date. Once you finish a mural that big, you feel like you could take on anything.
BM: Tell us a bit more about your forthcoming project in Shoreditch?
AT: I’ll be having my first little solo show at Canvas Bar on Old Street, from 5th until 28th February and hopefully painting a few walls in Shoreditch and elsewhere around London at the same time. There’ll be a mix of work, from the last 2 years and lots of new stuff. I don’t exhibit very often so I’m really excited about letting people see my studio work somewhere other then online.
BM: How would you describe the art scene in Shoreditch/London? Why is it unique compared to other parts of the UK?
AT: Massive, eclectic, beautiful, bonkers and ever-changing. I’ve always loved the City and had friends here but it’s a far more attractive and inviting place now than it was 10 years ago and I think urban art has played a huge part in that. London is unique to me because there’s less of a boundary here between fine art and urban art / street art / graffiti. There’s room for everything. The rest of the country is generally still treating them as very different, separate things and that stops a lot of artists from getting the exposure they deserve.
BM: Who are your favourite artists?
AT: Too many to list but daVinci will always be my first love. I do have a proper art crush on Geoff Diego Litherland though.
BM: What are your future plans?
AT: Eat, paint, sleep. Repeat until End.
