Just before falling asleep, your mind usually starts drifting away. Without actually noticing, at some point you will realise you are already dreaming. That is when the subconscious mind starts working out thoughts and images that you had unconsciously been processing and metabolizing during the day. So this is what dreams are made of: quirky, surreal overlapping images.
Which sounds pretty cool, but will sound even better when you’ll discover Eugenia Loli’s collages. Because if those images are what dreams are made of, then her collages are made of the same matter.
Eugenia is a filmmaker and collage artist originally from Greece, who travelled quite a lot in her life (UK, Germany, California) and who has explored various field in the working environment. In 2012, as it’s possible to read on her Tumblr page, she decided to try collages – and we’re happy that she did.
“I don’t think an artist should ‘choose’ their style – to me, that’s the death of art,” – she says on her Tumblr page. “I start my collages from a “base” picture, and then juxtapose images; sometimes I know what I want the collage to look like in the end, but sometimes I just leave the images to fit themselves. Often, the picture I start from ends up not even being part of the final collage.”
Her collages might revoke Magritte’s surreal style, but her main influences are Kieron “Cur3es” Cropper, Bryan “Glass Planet” Olson David Delruelle.
If there is a way to escape reality and wander in dreams for a while, her collages are sure a fast, fascinating way to do so.
