‘A Beautiful Disorder’-UK’s first major Chinese sculpture exhibition

C 2016 Cass Sculpture Foundation, Wang Yuyang, Rendering of Identity, 2015

The first major exhibition of outdoor sculptures by contemporary Greater Chinese artists is being brought to the UK. ‘A Beautiful Disorder’ by the Cass Sculpture Foundation opens 2nd July until 6th November. With eighteen monumental sculptures displayed on the grounds of CASS, viewers will have plenty to look at.

‘A Beautiful Disorder’ is a quote from an influential letter written by Jesuit missionary and artist Jean Denis Attiret in 1743. This letter had a tremendous impact on the effect of English garden culture. He described the ability for Chinese gardens to provoke opposing sensations for the viewer. There is also an idea for the Chinese garden to exude a sense of violence that contrasts the calmness that a garden can possess. These ideas work together in the eighteen sculptures that were created for the exhibition.

Inspired by Attiret, the exhibition buds on the historical relationship between English and Chinese landscape aesthetics. Each sculpture invites viewers to take in China’s past, present and future relationship with the world including the UK. Each piece adds insight into Chinese culture, politics and society today from the perspective of dynamic artists. Each artist employs different materials ranging from bronze, stone, steel and wood to portray different insight into Chinese culture.

Artist for ‘A Beautiful Disorder’ include Bi Ronron, Cao Fei, Jennifer Ma Wen, Wang Wei and many more.
